Hamilton explains to the recipient that he has just had a note from Mr. Hallam, and they are making plans to dine. Hamilton states that the recipient would do him a great favour if he were to consent to dine with them on Tuesday as well.

Harrison writes to thank Davenport for the kind invitation, but he cannot get away to come to Minneapolis because he is "very busy." This letter was written during Harrison's term as the 23rd President of the United States; his administration is often remembered for policies such as the Sherman Anti-Trust Act which sought to guard against the formation of monopolies. Before assuming the Presidency, Harrison fought in the Civil War, and also served as a Senator from Indiana; he conducted an unsuccessful bid for reelection to the Presidency in 1892.

In response to Bartlett's letter, Halleck states that he has not written anything about the "rebellion" [American Civil War] other than his official reports and correspondence from 1862 and 1863. Though he does not have copies of these documents himself, they can be procured from the War Department in Washington. Halleck also mentions that he translated "Jomini's Life of Napolean" and wrote his "International Law" before the war, although they were published during it. The recipient of the letter, John Russell Bartlett, was a bibliophile, ethnographer, librarian to John Carter Brown, U. S.

Udall responds to Dr. Trembley, stating that "Your Institute idea is first rate." Though he himself has a tight schedule in the next few months, Udall offers to send some of his best people in his stead. Trembley may be F.J. Trembley, a Lehigh faculty member in the biology department. Udall served four terms in Congress before serving as President Kennedy's Secretary of the Interior.

Truman responds to Whitaker's letter, thanking him for the "practical support" he has offered to conservation efforts by establishing a four-year course at Lehigh in that subject. At the time this letter was written, Truman had been elected President on his own ticket, after completing the term of Franklin Delano Roosevelt who died in office. In addition to serving as President and Vice President, Truman also served in World War I, worked as a farmer, a haberdasher, and a judge before joining the Senate where he investigated military expenditure.

Cooper speculates in the Preface that "Perhaps there is no other country where history is so little adapted to poetical illustration than the United States." Published in 1825, _Lionel Lincoln_ was not warmly received by critics; it dealt with Boston in the days of the early Revolution, focusing on the battle at Bunker Hill.

Stevenson reports that the center stone of Bell Rock lighthouse has been placed, and it will soon be ready. He offers specifics about the height and construction, and expresses, "It is a matter of no small gratification to me that this light-house which has engaged so much of my attention for fifteen years-- is now so near a conclusion." Robert Stevenson worked as engineer for the Northern Lighthouse Board from 1808-1842, erecting 15 lighthouses. The light at Bell Rock was his most notable. Robert also completed civil engineering work on Edinburgh roads and Hutcheson Bridge in Glasgow.

Handwritten notes on the verso seem to comprise a reading list of classical authors such as Plutarch and Herodotus.

Swift states that he received Simson's book, but "you tell me nothing whether you design a second Edition." Swift requests that Simson "deliver this parcel to the Person that calls for it."

The card upon which the poem is transcribed is headed, "Prayer of Cleanthes the Stoic" and is signed at the bottom with the date and "Davos" (Switzerland). See also Margaret Symonds' letter to the recipient of her father's translation of this poem.

The translation reads, "Lead--me God, and thou fate the daughter of God/ Whithersoever I am by you appointed to go:/ For I will follow unreluctant; and yet, should I refuse,/ Through Cowardice or sin upgrown in me, none the less shall I surely follow." Symonds is known as the author of _Studies of the Greek Poets_ (1873) as well as his translations and books about Italian sculptors Michelangelo and Benvenuto Cellini.

The letter has been pasted on cardboard.

Buckland writes to Allan to thank him for favors to a botany professor. He describes illustrations in a book and hopes Allan will attend the Royal Society meeting at which a lizard will be presented. Thomas Allan, who developed one of the finest collections of minerals in England, published an _Alphabetical list of the names of minerals at present most familiar in the English, French, and German languages_ (1808), and discovered the mineral Allanite which was named for him.

Tyler writes to Spencer, expressing his "regret and surpize" [sic] in the wake of accusations against Mr. Holmes, a clerk in the Land Office; Tyler had forwarded papers regarding this affair to Spencer, requesting an investigation.

The letter is written on paper bearing a black mourning border around the edges.

Stephen, a philosopher and the first editor of the _Dictionary of National Biography_ , is responding to a query regarding his book _Essays on Free-Thinking and Plain-Speaking_ (1873) which has been out of print and will not be republished. He recommends that the recipient try to locate it at a secondhand bookseller's shop. Stephen closes by saying, "I have not a spare copy myself, or I should be glad to part with it in return for your kind appreciation." In addition to his literary work, Stephen is known as the father of innovative novelist Virginia Woolf (1882-1941).

The letter bears the impression of a seal and a postmark. A notation on the verso reads, "Promiscuous letters."

Stephenson writes to his brother Robert to coordinate an upcoming visit for business including John Woodhouse. He suggests that Robert take the "Telegraph Coach so that you shall arrive here early on Monday night" since George has to leave shortly for an appointment on Wednesday. The letter may have been written in connection to the George Stephenson's work as a railway engineer; his brother and son worked with him in developing the first locomotive-building company in the world (Robert Stephenson & Company), headquartered in Newcastle.

The autograph has been glued to a more sturdy paper and bears folded tape at the edges. A note at the bottom reads, "George Stephenson--Engineer."

Stephenson's autograph appears to have been cut out and collected.

Alan Stevenson expresses his regrets that he will not be able to attend the Carson Class Dinner as he is leaving town, but "should otherwise, have been most happy to attend." The Carson Class Club was comprised of former students of the Edinburgh Royal High School, who had attended the classes of Dr. Aglionby Ross Carson, between 1815 and 1821. Alan worked as a lighthouse engineer on 12 lighthouses in the tradition of his father Robert Stevenson, engineer to the Northern Lighthouse Board from 1808-1842 (see also, letter from Robert Stevenson re: Bell Rock Lighthouse).

Hanson writes to the Governor of Virginia to explain the Acts of Congress of the 10th and 11th which call for state legislatures to complete the quota of troops assigned to them, as well as to report the number of white inhabitants living in that state. Hanson urges Harrison to be mindful that "Altho' the present aspect of American Affairs is truly favourable, and opens to our view the brightest prospects of a glorious peace...

Sir Alison writes to report that he sent a copy of Southey's letter to Longman two months ago, and he has the acknowledgment. Alison expresses regret that the recipient did not call, and requests that he visit Possil House when next in Glasgow. The Robert Southey mentioned in the letter refers to a conservative literary critic of the period; "Longman" may allude to the London publishing house.

The letter bears a postmark and the impression of a seal. At the top of the leaf, Tarleton has written "Cholmondely Castle" which may refer to "Cholmondeley Castle," an estate built in 1801-04 by the first Marquis of Cholmondeley, and famous for its gardens.

Tarleton requests that Byfield send his papers to him at Bolesworth Castle [associated with a branch of the Tarleton family], Chester until further instructions. The author of _A History of the Campaigns of 1780 and 1781 in the Southern Provinces of North America_ (1787), Tarleton may have been on active duty during the American Revolution.

Tompkins writes on behalf of Mr. Walter Smith, a thirteen-year old boy who wants to be appointed as a midshipman.

Trollope writes to explain that her sore throat prevented her from coming. She tells the recipient that she should never feel obliged to break other engagements to be at home, because "truly, you have daughters who can receive so well" in her place. Trollope also extends her thanks for the loan of books, and notes that they are being returned in good condition.

Symonds is responding to Hall's query regarding the translation of the Prayer of Cleanthes (Stoic philosopher) he received from her father, John Addington Symonds, who translated classical works. Margaret states that the translation of this prayer on her father's grave appears also in his _Greek Poets_ and that he probably translated it several times in different styles. She mentions that her father always maintained that some of his best literary friends lived in America, and she also refers to an acquaintance with Robert Louis Stevenson and Duff Gordon.

The letter is typed on U.S. Senate letterhead, headed with Taft's professional information.

Taft asks Walter to "make a request for special action" to bring a bill to the Senate before the adjournment. The bill is for the adoption of Joyce Jacqualyn Johnson, the daughter of an American soldier and a Japanese woman. The father, currently fighting in Korea, wants to adopt the baby with his new wife and bring the child to the United States when his cycle of duty ends. Taft states that "the child, unwanted, was abandoned to a foundling home and later adopted by the Johnsons who cannot have children of their own." Taft, the son of President William H.

The document contains no information about the addressee; it may have been part of a larger document, or preserved as part of an autograph album. For further information, see the PBS site on Tesla (http://www.pbs.org/tesla/). There is a Tesla Society in New York and a Museum in Belgrade.

Without preamble, Tesla states, "It gives me pain to realize every day that the world thinks more of me than I deserve." He appends his signature and the date to this message. Tesla's inventions include the Tesla coil used in radios as well as innovations in alternating-current and experiments with human-made lightning. Upon his death, many of Tesla's papers were missing, including any documentation that may have existed on the "death beam" he claimed to have perfected.

Scott asks the Professor not to say anything to Mr. Rae about Scott's opinion of his work until sending Mr. Jeffrey's positive remarks to soften the blow; Scott states, "It is a cruel thing to blight the hopes of several years study in probably an ingenious and amiable man." Scott also mentions Lady Hook and the East Indies. A writer of historical romances and a poet, Scott began his literary career by traveling in his native Scotland and collecting folk ballads, the subject of his first book. He was influenced by German writers like Goethe (also represented in the collection).
