Hanson writes to the Governor of Virginia to explain the Acts of Congress of the 10th and 11th which call for state legislatures to complete the quota of troops assigned to them, as well as to report the number of white inhabitants living in that state. Hanson urges Harrison to be mindful that "Altho' the present aspect of American Affairs is truly favourable, and opens to our view the brightest prospects of a glorious peace... yet a relaxation in our exertions will not only be disgraceful, but may prove dangerous and even fatal to our liberties." Hanson probably wrote this letter during the period in which Hanson served in the Continental Congress (1780-1782) of which he was elected President in 1781.
