Charles L. Moench Papers
Charles L. Moench was born on February 20, 1855 in Lititz, Pa., to William N. and Louise Schneider Moench. He married Gertrude N. Schultz in 1879. Moench was educated at the Moravian College Theological Seminary and the Union College Theological Seminary. Upon graduation and his ordination as a deacon in the Moravian Church, Moench served as the pastor for the congregation at Blairstown, Iowa (1878 -1881) and then for Hopedale, Pa. (1881-1886). He then served as the minister for the Second Moravian Church of Philadelphia (1886-1889) and the Lititz, Pa. congregation (1889-1901). He was consecrated a bishop in 1898. After leaving the Lititz congregation, he moved to Philadelphia as the head of the First Moravian Church (1901-1908). Between 1908 and 1924, Moench held several leadership positions within the Provincial Elder's Conference, including the presidency. During this period, he also served as the president of the Eastern District of the Northern Province of the Moravian Church in America and the president of the Society for Propagating the Gospel. After a long absence from the pulpit, he briefly led the congregation at Graceham, Maryland in 1925. After suffering several heart attacks, he retired in October of 1925. In addition to his leadership positions within the church, Moench also served on the Board of Trustees for Moravian College and Seminary, Moravian Seminary and College for Women, and Linden Hall in Lititz, Pa. He also served on the Board of Trustees for St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem. He died in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 11, 1927. 6 folders This collection consists mostly of sermons written by Moench during his tenure as a minister. Most of the sermons were written while Moench was head of the Second Moravian Church of Philadelphia (1886-1889) and the Lititz, Pa. congregation (1889-1901). Some are partial or complete lecture series. The collection also includes four sermons written in German. Additionially, the collection includes a message to the General Synod in 1909 and several newspaper clippings regarding religious topics.
