The earliest mention of a phenylglyoxylic acid was made some eighty years ago when Kekale postulated that isatin had a benzene nucleus with a -CO-CO2H group, as well as, an amino group, He also postulated that isatin was the lactam of Isatic acid which he thought was o-amino-benzoylformic acid or o-aminophenylglyoxylic acid.
