Polk writes to his Secretary of War to recommend the bearer of the note to him for the post of surgeon to one of the units of Baltimore troops. Polk states that the physician has "high claims on account of his eminent qualifications." This letter was written during Polk's term as eleventh President of the United States (1844-1849); before assuming the duties of this office, Polk served ten terms in Congress, two as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and he also became Governor of Tennessee (1839-1841). During his presidency, the Mexican War began, as a result of which the United States acquired California and New Mexico with the help of then-General Zachary Taylor.
