Education as an Ethical Concern in the Global Era

This paper was originally presented at the 2014 conference of the Midwest Comparative and International Education Society. We are grateful to the conference organizers and audience for their helpful and thoughtful suggestions.

This article examines the issue of the ethical status of education, particularly as related to individual dignity and freedom. We select cases that have been described in fine detail by social science—the education of girls and the education of all children within counter-hegemonic movements. These cases involve issues of access to equitable and high quality education.

Simulation of Nox reduction in power plant flue gas

Abstract Power plant generates electricity as well as high temperature waste heat. NOx is main pollutant in power plant flue gas. NOx reduction reaction is expected to happen in given duct section. Selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) method is selected to control NOx level. SNCR requires no modification on duct geometry and this method is more cost-effective compared to other NOx reduction systems. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique is employed to simulate flue gas flow and mass and heat transports with an injection of droplets.

Medieval Manuscripts

Lehigh Codex 04 Moral and didactic writings

This is a thirteenth-century compendium of moral and didactic writings, with a colophon dating the manuscript to 1268. The book contains a varied collection of texts, ranging from Roman Seneca in the 1st century, through the North African apologist Fulgentius in the sixth, to the near-contemporary sermons and the recent Moralitates of the learned Englishman Holcot. The manuscript is a good example of a late medieval compendium, and contains a variety of authors known all across Europe.

Binding fragment, from a manuscript of Peter Lombard, Sentences, on parchment. Written in England, ca. 1280. With contemporary marginal glossing. The text is from book IV, distinctiones xxvii-xxviii, on the consanguineous relationships preventing marriage, murdering one's spouse, matrimonial pledges, marriage for nuns, and adultery. Five-line initial "H" in red with blue penwork on verso.
