Sayre Field Redevelopment Report

About this Digital Document

The following report is the product of Lehigh student participation in a cross-disciplinary, team-based, Integrated Learning Experience (ILE). Each semester team members are tasked with designing or enhancing elements of Lehigh University's athletics facilities. The fall 2021 team focused on redeveloping Sayer Field, a Lehigh owned plot ofland that currently does not include any amenities and is used for club, intramural, and recreational activities. The Sayre Field redevelopment is a continuation of two prior Sayer development projects aimed at improving the accessibility and usage of Sayre Field to the benefit of Lehigh University students and faculty. Lehigh University is in a period of growth with the student population expected to increase by 20% from 2019 to 2029 as well as an increase of faculty and staff. The new residential dorms and academic building construction around campus shows the investment that Lehigh is making for this new era; however, the current students of Lehigh feel that there is a lack of accessible recreational space such as gyms, basketball courts, and other athletic facilities. To meet the needs of the current student body, Lehigh must increase space for weightlifting, studios, cardio, and many other athletic activities. This is also not factoring in the influx of students in the next decade. The proposed Sayre Park Recreational Complex and Fields will display a greater commitment to the physical and mental wellbeing of a growing student and faculty body. The proposed design will provide a combination indoor/outdoor recreation space supplementing current Goodman and Taylor Gym resources and is designed specifically for intramural, club, and non-athlete needs. This Sayre park development is a unique multi-phase opportunity for Lehigh to re-equip the campus to reach national standards, accommodate an expanding student and faculty population, and underpin the institution-wide plan for future growth.
