Project Description

Lehigh AI is a digital hub for collaborative efforts to increase AI literacy and explore how AI technologies can enhance learning, teaching, research, and community engagement. Funded by a Lehigh University Future Makers Strategy Grant from the Office of Strategic Planning & Initiatives and the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning, Lehigh AI creates and sustains an online resource with instructions for classroom activities, teaching modules integrable to multidisciplinary classes, technical how-tos, demonstrations, and advice for leveraging tools based on artificial intelligence.

The program was designed with several core objectives:

Promote AI literacy – Provide faculty, students, and staff with opportunities to explore and understand AI technologies, their capabilities, and their societal impact.

Support innovation and research – Encourage new and creative ways to integrate AI into education, research, and community projects, advancing Lehigh’s role as a leader in AI exploration.

Develop practical AI applications – Support projects demonstrating AI’s potential in healthcare, business, the arts, and social good, bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world impact.

Encourage ethical AI use – Facilitate projects that critically examine AI’s ethical challenges — including privacy concerns, misinformation, and bias mitigation — and show how AI can be a tool for social good.

Foster collaboration – Build a network of AI-engaged scholars, students, and professionals across disciplines, promoting cross-disciplinary partnerships and knowledge sharing.

Faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students at Lehigh were invited to submit short proposals outlining their work on AI-related concepts to achieve these goals. Proposals were evaluated through a two-phase process: a quantitative review of the qualification, innovation and impact; and a qualitative assessment of the fit to the award objectives, performed by a Lehigh AI Review Committee.

61 proposals were submitted in Fall 2024 from all of the Colleges and several interdisciplinary programs across the campus. The focal topics were distributed across research, teaching, and community engagement, with most frequently appearing keywords such as “accessibility,” “inclusivity,” “integration,” and “education.” Eventually, 20 projects were selected for funding, with 26 contributors. 15 were faculty, 4 staff, 4 undergraduate students, and 3 graduate students. 13 were affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences, 3 from the College of Engineering, 3 from the College of Business, 3 from the College of Education, 2 from the College of Health, and 2 from Library & Technology Services. Each accepted proposal received a $300 Lehigh AI award. Contributors developed their ideas into standardized, searchable project summaries.
