Image Theses and Dissertations The effects of pressure on the process of reciprocating friction and wear in hydrostatic pressure systems The results of friction and wear tests of ultrahigh-pressure seal rings and pistons are presented. Beryllium-copper rings were tested by oscillating a high pressure chamber on two pistons. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Effects of resonant vibrational excitation on residual stresses in low carbon steel beams Low frequency resonant vibrational excitation was investigated as a means of residual stress relief. Experimentation indicated stress relief occurred in those sections of the beams where the material was forced to exceed its yield point and platically deform, thus substantiating the fact that vibrational excitation has the potential of being a stress relieving mechanism. Image Theses and Dissertations Dislocations and deformation produced by ultrasonic welding techniques in single crystal silicon A review of the literature concerning the metallurgy of silicon, particularly those characteristics which affect its use as a semiconductor, is presented. Dislocations and deformation processes are then discussed with reference to techniques used to observe them. View Item

Image Theses and Dissertations Quantitative scanning microwave microscopy of a biological cell The electromagnetic properties of a live biological system are extremely important to many medical applications. While information about electromagnetic properties of tissues are available in the literature, little or no data are available for a single cell or subcellular structures. Microwave biological/cell detection has been demonstrated to be useful and promising in many medical applications due to its internal properties such as non-invasive, fast and label-free. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations The effect of materials and surface finish on the wear of high pressure chamber reciprocating seals The wear of high pressure seal anti-extrusion rings and pistons was studied using an accelerated life test in which a high pressure hydrostatic chamber was reciprocated on two pistons while maintaining a pressure of 100,000 to 200,000 psi in the chamber. Image Theses and Dissertations The effect of microstructure on the notch toughness of plain carbon steel Brittle failure is a major engineering problem and a better understanding of its nature and the conditions which prevent it is badly needed to minimize its occurrence in modern steel structures. Image Theses and Dissertations Some effects of temperature and strain rate upon low cycle fatigue life of "T-1" steel In the past several years significant advances have been made in the knowledge of plastic theory and a better understanding of elasto-plastic states realized. This fact has led design engineers to a new concept of design; namely, one involving design for finite fatigue life. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations The flow stress of polycrystalline gold in plane strain compression Comparison of the scribed grids before and after deformation showed that therre was no sliding past the compression plates so that sticking friction conditions would be expected. Comparison of the flow stress results with existing deformation theories showed that, with sticking friction, the results of this experiment can be explained analytically. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Pressure, ultrasonic vibration and temperature effects on gold coppter contacts An ultrasonic bonder, modified to include heating in the bonding cycle, was used to produce contact between a small gold ball and a polished copper sheet. Contact resistance measurements were used to follow the effects of the bonding parameters. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Deformation and structural changes occuring at the interface during gold-gold thermocompression bonding Thermocompression bonding has been investigated by deforming tapes against a gold film plated on a rigid substrate.
