Image Theses and Dissertations Investigation of Geothermal Heat Extraction Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (sCO2) and Its Utilization in sCO2-based Power Cycles and Organic Rankine Cycles - A Thermodynamic & Economic Perspective CO2 capture and sequestration in deep saline aquifers is widely considered to be a leading option for controlling greenhouse gas emissions. One such possibility involves injection of supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) into a high-permeability geothermal reservoir. In addition to the benefit of sequestering the CO2 in reservoirs, the CO? can be used to mine geothermal heat for utilization above ground. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Finite difference solutions for time dependent temperature distributions in metal cutting tools The results of a numerical finite difference analysis of the transient temperature variations in a tool-chip system subject to prescribed rates of heat generation in the primary shear zone and along the tool-chip interface are presented. These results are used to identify optimum locations in the tool for remote thermocouple sensors and to study the influence of cratering and cutting conditions on the output of the remote thermocouple sensors. ... Image Theses and Dissertations An experimental investigation of a water heat pipe A stainless steel water heat pipe instrumented with external surface thermocouples, internal thermocouples and pressure gages was designed, built, and operated. The operating condition of the heat pipe was controlled by manipulation of a resistance heater in the evaporator section an anannulus type water cooling jacket in the condenser section. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Chemkin Simulation of Mercury Oxidation in a Condensing Heat Exchanger Mercury oxidation in a slip stream condensing heat exchanger (CHX) developed by the Energy Research Center (ERC) at Lehigh University was modeled using hundreds of possible chemical reactions and tens of species in coal-fired power plant furnace and flue gas downstream of the furnace. The modeling tools, CHEMKIN, SENKIN and PSR were used to conduct equilibrium calculations in the furnace and the kinetic calculations in the flue gas leading to the CHX. The detailed mechanism of mercury speciation at the furnace and downstream of the furnace has been investigated. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Quantitative scanning microwave microscopy of a biological cell The electromagnetic properties of a live biological system are extremely important to many medical applications. While information about electromagnetic properties of tissues are available in the literature, little or no data are available for a single cell or subcellular structures. Microwave biological/cell detection has been demonstrated to be useful and promising in many medical applications due to its internal properties such as non-invasive, fast and label-free. View Item
