The sources of the Monk's Tale have been divided into five categories: Italian, French, the Bible, Classical and Historical. The Tale's thematic unity has proven almost as elusive, but lately scholars have focused their attention fruitfully on this aspect of the Tale. Lastly, Fortune's role in the Tale has an ancient precursor.
