This thesis studies 2 things: the characteristics and evolution of the Gothic novel; the essence of Gothic that is significant in Matthew Gregory Lewis's The Monk, Robert Charles Maturins's Melmoth The Wanderer, Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone, Joseph Sheridan LeFanu's Uncle Silas, Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, and Iris Murdoch's The Unicorn. This thesis attempts to offset the common view that they have nothing in common but entertainment value.
