The promise made by Mr. Spectator in the tenth issue of his paper, ("I shall endeavour to enliven Morality with wit and to temper wit with Morality") is, I believe, the key to an understanding and appreciation of the Spectator. The manner in which Addison and Steele interweave humor and didacticism is the achievement of the Spectator. In this paper I examine in detail degrees and methods of this blend of humor and didacticism.
