Carl F. Strauch
Melville found his horizontal fore-aft symbolism extant within naval tradition and utilized it to convey his polictical and sociological philosophy. Melville utilizes symbolism of parts of the ship and of the ship herself, and in so doing, men become physical microcosms of their ship and the ship becomes a microcosm of the world.
