This study examines Stephen Dedalus' (fictional character) search for a perspective from which to view his own existence and his ability as an artist. This is dramatically revealed through James Joyce's ingenious handling of specific words which form recurrent image patterns. These patterns give A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man its texture, ummediacy, and body.
