Structurally, Light in August is complicated, since the simple story of Lena Grove, the enigmatic story of Gail Hightower, and the violent story of Joe Christmas are superimposed on each other. Many reputable critics believe that Ligh in August has no basic unity, that the narrative strands do not meaningfully connect.
