Frakes, James R.
"The Dead" is the concluding story of James Joyce's first major piece of writing, a collection of short stories called Dubliners, published in 1914. In Dubliners, Joyce explores the sterility of life in a modern city, Dublin, through the lives of its citizens. In "The Dead", Joyce brings together all the themes of sterility and escape into one story, and moves forward into a deeper and more penetrating examination of the causes of sterility.
