A bond is created by vibrations, in the case of ultrasonic welding, which induce relative motion between two weldment members held together by an external clamping force. The relative motion and the clamping force combine to create shear strains in the interface which mechanically break-up the oxide thus providing clean surfaces by exposing fresh metal.
