Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences between the Middle English romance, Ywain and Gawain, and its Old French source, Chretien de Troyes' Yvain. Changes made by the English author prove that he was not merely translating Chretian's work, but also adapting it to his own purposes, and can thereby be considered a poet in his own right.
