Abstract

This paper is an exposition of the collection process introduced by Philip Hall in "Groups of Prime Power Order." Some simple conditions under which the process fails to terminate are discussed. The method of labeled commutators is introduced and then illustrated with a proof of the exponent formulas originally proved by Eugene F. Krause. Hall's collection formula is proved in a generalized form. This generality necessitates the use of a more complicated system of existence and precedence conditions on labels.
