Abstract

The elastic stress field equations for blunt cracks are derived and presented in a form equivalent to the usual sharp crack tip stress fields. The difference in these stress field equations is shown to be a simple function of the radius of curvature at the crack tip. Applications of these stress field equations are suggested to the fields of stress corrosion, experimental measurements of stress intensity factors and criteria for determining the direction of cracking in stressed bodies.
