Combined and condensed, the thesis of this paper is that critics in the past have often been mistsaken in their evaluations of the character John, the cuckold in the Miller's Tale; that this character does not deserve to be cuckolded; and that Chaucer, for definite reasons, gives to the cuckold a character which arouses the reader's sympathies.
