This thesis is concerned with partially demonstrating Thomas Wolfe's artistic achievement by proving the presence of formal structure in his Look Homeward, Angel. The body of the thesis attempts to show that Wolfe's form is based, first, on a plot centered around certain ideas: birth, voyages, growth, and death; second, on certain themes, such as predestination, and imprisonment and excape, and the imagery surrounding these themes; and third, on characterization, involving human aloneness and non-communication and the search for a guiding authority.
