Although Hawthorne's aesthetic theories have been discussed at length, little or nothing has been suggested that would imply a progression from a functional aesthetic theory developed from Romantic philosophy, through a counter-action based on personal tastes and limitations, to a comprehensive combination of both approaches with a final emphasis on the latter.
