In the Henry IV plays Shakespeare depicts his greatest comic character, Sir John Falstaff. Falstaff is a complex figure combining characteristics and functions of several personages found in history, legend, and native English and classical drama. The purpose of this study is to compare these characters with Falstaff in order to determine how closely they resemble him.
