The Elizabethan mystique is a body of doctrine that is both political and religious in character. In its political aspect the mystique assumes the form of royalism, for the prince is the center of the national life. In its religious aspect the mystique assumes the form of Protestantism. This Protestant doctrine demands that the gospel be properly proclaimed within a given common wealth.
