The behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams subjected to the combined action of shear and bending is admittedly an old problem and a complex one. In fact, after the first theoretical analysis of the behavior of reinforced concrete beams in pure bending was published, structural engineers were reasonably confident of their method for designing the horizontal tension reinforcement.
