Andreas Schoute Papers
Andreas Schoute was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 12, 1700. Although his parents wished for him to work for a merchant, Schoute desired to go to sea and so joined a ship and advanced in short time to captain. His brother was also in the company as a merchant. After 1728 he mostly worked on Dutch ships. They visited many places such as Cadiz, Gibraltar, Genoa, Lisbon, and Algeria. Later, he served as chief helmsman and as captain on another voyage. In 1741 he served as chief helmsman in Russia for two years. His fleet stayed in Tallin, where Schoute stayed with a merchant named Carl Dehn. In Dehn's house Schoute met Moravians who were also living there. After talking to them a "fire" was created in Schoute for the faith. He married Elisabeth Jungblut in 1744. She died eleven months later and their young daughter soon followed. In 1746 he resigned his position and visited Herrnhaag, where he was received into the Moravian Church on December 31, 1747. He served under Captain Garrison on the Moravian ship, the "Irene." In 1757, on a voyage with Garrison from New York the ship was captured by the French and Schoute remained in captivity in Louisburg for 9 months. In 1758, he arrived in Bethlehem. He went on several more voyages after that but became sick in 1762 and never fully recovered. He became sick again, and on November 7, 1764 he died. 1 box Diaries, navigation books, correspondence, and a dictionary relating to Schoute's service on the ships the "Elisabeth Galleley," the "Irene," and the Russian ship, the "Astracan," and to Schoute's trips to North Carolina, New York, and Russia.
