Lodge extends an invitation to Harmon (professor at Lehigh University, 1925-1964), whom he calls a "community leader," to get "a special inside look at the United Nations in action" on an upcoming visit organized by the World Affairs Center. Lodge explains the enclosed leaflet regarding the United States Mission and its role in the UN in debating issues like disarmament and the "Middle East situation." Lodge served in the Senate (1937-1944 and 1947-1953), taking a brief absence to serve in World War II. At the time this letter was written, Lodge served as the United States representative to the United Nations, a post he helf from 1953-1960; he also served as ambassador to Vietnam where he assisted in the peace process, Germany, and the Vatican.
