Alpha Portland Cement Co. Board of Directors meeting minutes, April 24, 1917

Annotation Minutes of board meeting of the Alpha Portland Cement Co. held April 24, 1917 which include the following actions: the President reported he had increased to wages of hourly, monthly, and piece rate workers; the President discussed guarding the company's power magazines and the board accepted his recommendation that it was not necessary to guard the magazines; the President reported that he had offered Mr. Carter $1,250,000 for the Coosa Portland Cement Plant at Ragland, Ala., received a counter-offer of $1,434,000, and was authorized by the Board to continue negotiating; the President discussed the construction of company housing in some detail; the board decided not to propose a formal price for cement to the government until they knew how much cement would be required. The Alpha Portland Cement Co. was organized in 1895 when it acquired the Whitaker Cement Co. Originally based in Philadelphia, the company later moved its headquarters to Easton, Pa. Based in the area of the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania known as the ""Cement Belt,"" Alpha Portland Cement Co. grew to become one of the largest cement companies in the United States.
