Ada Clare Papers

Clare has recently changed her surname from "McElhenney" to "Clare." Clare writes to Mitchell to inform him that all past and future transactions under her new surname will be "as valid and effectful as under that of" Ada McElhenney.

McCrady writes in answer to Mitchell's letter on the preceding page and includes a copy of a letter he received. He also encloses a check for a "trial settlement" and begs Mitchell to immediately forward him the legal releases in his possession.

Mitchell addresses the mistake McCrady believes was made to his account with "Ms. McElhenney." Mitchell explains he requested his father to write to McCrady to express satisfaction with McCrady's account, and he apologizes if no such letter was ever sent. The letter closes with Mitchell's affirmation that his father will attend to his affairs during his absence from the city.

Clare asks for $50 dollars "by bearer Mr. Whilmhurst." She also states that Mr. Asten "would do nothing towards the water-lock" and asks Mitchell to relay the amount of the plumber's bill when he receives it.

Clare describes being "somewhat annoyed" by the contents of Mitchell's prior letter. She thought it was clear she'd like to rent the house from Mr. Asten for one or two more years as he never commented otherwise. She closes with the promise to come down to Mitchell's office and discuss the matter.

Wilmshurst confirms receiving fifty dollars from C. G. Mitchell "for Mrs. Clare."

Clare's Receipt includes three separate occasions of receiving money from Mitchell, totaling to $100.

McCrady closes with a request that Mitchell forward the legal documents when he receives them from his father.

Clare's financial receipt declares C. G. Mitchell sent her seventy dollars in total from October 22nd to November 5th, 1859.
