Image Theses and Dissertations Refugee resettlement in Pennsylvania: Community support against all odds Recent United States policies under the Trump administration have severely restricted refugee resettlement efforts, despite an increased rate of displaced people worldwide. This study explores how refugee resettlement in Pennsylvania has changed in the wake of Trump-era policies and how resettlement agencies and communities have responded to policy changes. Literature indicates that refugees offer an overall benefit to communities, so a significant loss of refugees is expected to harm communities. View Item

Image Theses and Dissertations The Pennsylvanian Mill Creek Limestone in Pennsylvania. Limestones are generally reported to be rare in the anthracite fields of eastern Pennsylvania. This is, however, not true, at least in the northern anthracite field where thin beds of limestone are frequently encountered in the mines. Most of these beds are believed to be of fresh-water origin because they are limited in horizontal distribution and are barren of fossils. The only known exception to this is the Mill Creek limestone, which is identified from a few surface exposures and has been found in mines. It is a richly fossiliferous marine limestone. View Item

Image Theses and Dissertations A Cold War Sentinel: Representative Francis E. Walter--Immigration Hawk, Anti-Communist, and Solon of the Lehigh Valley This dissertation explores the career of Rep. Francis E. Walter (D-PA), his emergence in the 1950s as the key congressional defender of restricted immigration, and his egregious chairmanship of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). I argue that Walter abandoned the moderate liberalism of his early career, choosing instead to embrace the reactionary politics of the McCarthy Era. Based on a thorough examination of the Walter papers at Lehigh University, as well as other collections, I demonstrate that Walter's career is a paradox often misunderstood by scholars. View Item

Image Theses and Dissertations Paradoxes of Toleration: The Ambiguities of Church and State in Colonial and Revolutionary Pennsylvania This dissertation offers a reassessment of Pennsylvania's place as a model for religious liberty from settlement up to the election of 1800. Through a careful examination of private papers, printed material, denominational minutes, and governmental records, this dissertation uncovers a more complicated picture of religious liberty in the commonwealth than previous studies have acknowledged. This dissertation shows that Penn's vision for his colony created a confounding relationship between church and state rather than a bastion of religious freedom. View Item
