Image Theses and Dissertations Homesickness and Psychological Distress in Asian International Students: The Potential Mediating Roles of Social Connectedness and Universal-Diverse Orientation Homesickness is one of the most prevalent and problematic acculturative stressors experienced by Asian international college students (e.g., Lu, 1990; Smith & Khawaja, 2011; Ying, 2005). However, research has yet to examine variables that may account for how homesickness progresses into psychological distress for a percentage of these students (e.g., Tochkov et al., 2010). Sampling Asian international students (N = 386) at various U.S. View Item

Image Theses and Dissertations Studies of the effects of perceptual and cognitive processing on perceived duration Three experiments were performed in order to test two theories of time perception, the storage size theory and the input register theory. The input register theory holds that perceived duration is a function of the level of input stimulation during the interval, while the storage size theory holds that perceived duration is a function of the storage size the memories associated to the interval in question. Image Theses and Dissertations An electrophysiological study of the primary retinal fibers of the retino-tectal and retino-thalamo-cortical visual systems of the frog, rana pipiens An electrophysiological study was made of the primary retinal projections in the retino-tectal and retino-thalamo-cortical visual system of the frog (Rana pipiens). The data obtained from optic nerve stimulation indicated that the optic fibers are trimodally distributed in the surface layers of the contralateral tectum. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Bayesian prior probability distributions and subjective sensitivity to the variance of a sample of numbers This study was run to study human sensitivity to changes in sample variance. The subjects observed lists of numbers and were asked to estimate the mean for each list. Then they were to indicate how confident they were in their choice by means of a graph. The graph was to show the relative likelihood of other values they thought could be the mean. This type of graph can be considered a subjective probability distribution and is proposed for practical application in Bayesian statistical analysis. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Maternal Caregiving Representations: Links with Mother-Child Discourse and Children's Emotion Understanding While a great deal of research has examined children's attachment systems, much less work has focused on its reciprocal behavioral system, the caregiving system. Like other behavioral systems, the caregiving system is guided at the representational level, acting as a filter to influence a mother's interactions with her child. The goal of this study was to examine maternal caregiving representations in relation to mother-child discourse about emotion and children's emotion understanding abilities. View Item

Image Theses and Dissertations Parents' beliefs about preschooler's emotions: the role of socialization and implications for child outcomes Previous research has demonstrated that mothers vary in the degree to which they believe children's emotions are valuable. These beliefs relate to self-reported parenting behaviors. However, research has not examined how mothers' beliefs relate to children's socioemotional outcomes. View Item
Image Theses and Dissertations Specific Factors Associated with African American High School Students' HIV-Related Risk Behaviors The present study examined specific factors associated with Black high school students' HIV-related risk behaviors. Two-thousand eight hundred and thirty two self-report questionnaire responses were selected from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey outcomes to test the following research questions: RQ1. Do grade status differences exist in self-reported HIV-related risk behaviors in Black high school students, and are these differences moderated by gender; RQ2. View Item
