Image Age of Steel In the Age of Steel: Oral Histories from Bethlehem Pennsylvania -- Joseph S. Mitchell Joseph S. Mitchell (ca. 1916-May 22, 1986) was married to Mary Mitchell, née Sabota. Born in Czechoslovakia, he was the son of George and Eva Mihala, née Vojtek. He worked for Bethlehem Steel starting approximately 1924-25 as an expediter and checker in the billet yards. In this interview he discusses seniority, changing attitudes on work ethic, strikes, views on the union, working with women during World War II, social activities and retirement. View Item
Image Age of Steel In the Age of Steel: Oral Histories from Bethlehem Pennsylvania -- Owen J. McFadden Owen J. McFadden (ca. 1918-November 6, 1992) was married to Rose Marie McFadden, née Tutolo. He worked at Bethlehem Steel from 1939 to 1982 and served as a grievance officer for the union (United Steel Workers Local No. 2598). In this interview McFadden discusses his father's efforts as an organizer in 1910, his own organizing efforts starting with his employment in 1939, the 1941 strike and the role of strikebreakers, local and federal governmental reaction to the formation of the union, company attempts to break the union, and the benefits of the grievance process. After working at a converted knitting mill making 60mm shells and attending night school to learn how to operate metal-working machinery, she obtained a job in a test gang at Bethlehem Steel during World War II. After the war she became a typesetter at Mack Printing. In this interview she discusses the hiring process at Bethlehem Steel, meeting her husband at work, the different jobs she performed, work relationships between men and women, working conditions for women, wages, life during the Depression, and her views on feminism. Image Age of Steel In the Age of Steel: Oral Histories from Bethlehem Pennsylvania -- Joseph K. Mangan Joseph K. Mangan (ca. 1916-November 16, 1986) was married to Anna Mangan, née Narzisi . He was a Bethlehem city councilman from 1955-61, staged an unsuccessful bid for mayor on the Democratic ticket in the 1977 primary, and was assistant executive director of the Bethlehem Housing Authority. He was a key figure in developing 27 public parks in Bethlehem during his tenure as director of parks and public property from 1961 until 1976, when he retired. In this interview Mangan discusses the rapid growth of Bethlehem Steel and his 17 years with the company as a millwright in the coke ovens. View Item

Lopez Sr. (February 22, 1910?-July 6, 1996: a 1903 date appears in his obituary but conflicts with other data in the obituary and the interview), born in Chanute, Kansas, was a son of the Amado and Mariana Lopez, née Pereida. He was married to Rachel Lopez, née Rodriguez. Lopez started with Bethlehem Steel in 1926 and rose to the level of General Foreman before his retirement in 1970. Lopez's father, a native of Mexico, was recruited by Bethlehem Steel in San Antonio, Texas in 1923 and the family was brought to Bethlehem and housed in a labor camp. View Item
Image Age of Steel In the Age of Steel: Oral Histories from Bethlehem Pennsylvania -- Herman P. Landrock Herman P. Landrock (July 5, 1889 - May 29, 1980) was married to Anna Landrock, née Trembeth. He came to New York from Germany in 1906 at the age of 17 and was hired by Bethlehem Steel. Landrock previously served an apprenticeship at the Krupp Works in Essen. By age 20 he was promoted to foreman at Bethlehem Steel and subsequently held positions of increasing responsibility including chief tool engineer in the Ordinance Division and head plating engineer in the Plating Division. Herman, née Brotzman and after her death to Ruth A. Herman née Fulmer. Herman started working for Bethlehem Steel in 1934 and worked in the rolling mills until his retirement in 1972. After working a short time at Cutter silk mill Henning joined Bethlehem Steel in either 1914 or 1915. Henning was an active union organizer who was dismissed from the company around 1941 for smoking a cigarette in an unauthorized area and claims he was blackballed by the company. View Item

He was first married to Mary T. Guidon, née Lennert and after her death to Anna DeNardo Guidon née Jancosko. At age 16 Guidon went to work at the R.K. Laros silk mill and subsequently joined Bethlehem Steel in 1936. At Bethlehem Steel he worked in the rolling mills performing jobs such as table operator, guide setter, greaser, screw-down operator, and roller. View Item

Grund, Sr. ( ca. 1914-May 29, 1984), Palmerton, Pennsylvania, was the son of Joseph and Theresa Grund, née Heiser. He was married to Margaret Grund, née Rabel. Grund was a foreman in the Number 3 rolling mills at Bethlehem Steel, starting with the company in 1929. Dodson Griffin (December 21, 1909-Nov. 20, 2000) was the daughter of Charles Miner Dodson and Louisa Dodson, née Lake. She was married to Albion Meade Griffin, manager of the patent department at Bethlehem Steel. Her grandfather, Weston Dodson, Sr., was one of the founders of Weston Dodson Company, miners and sellers of coal. In this interview she discusses Bethlehem neighborhoods, prominent families, her education, automobiles, fashions, domestic activities, and social and leisure activities she participated in as a child, young woman, and as an adult. January 26, 1921) was married to Harold Gerew and was married to (and divorced from) Elwood W. Steigerwalt. She was the daughter of John H. and Augusta Mertz, née Evert. Gerew was one of many women employed by Bethlehem Steel during World War II. She worked as a sweeper, tool chaser, and lathe operator. View Item

He was married to Joanna Geisinger, née Little. Geisinger owned a grocery store, Geisinger Economy Store, in Allentown, Pennsylvania and later worked for Traub's Market in Allentown. Geisinger, a Mennonite, spoke Pennsylvania German while in grammar school. View Item

Furry (October 10, 1901-January 19, 1989), born in Passer (near Coopersburg), Pennsylvania, was the son of Charles and Ida Furry. He was married to Elizabeth M. Furry, née Egner. Furry started working for Bethlehem Steel as an ore and coke dumper and later as a stove tender. In this interview Furry discusses blast furnace operations, working conditions, safety and accidents (including his own), views on the union, union recruitment, and his experiences as an assistant foreman. 'Bernie' Fritz (August 22, 1919- May 4, 1996), born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was the son of John and Anna Fritz, née Martin. He was married to Anna D. Fritz, née Derrico. Fritz taught English and reading in local schools and served in a variety of coaching positions. He also supervised all the playgrounds in Bethlehem and in 1987 Heimpel Park was renamed Bernie Fritz Playground in his honor. Fritz also served Europe in the 121st Airborne Division during World War II. View Item
